The article concerns increasing general education level of north-eastern nations of the USSR and the attempts the Soviet government made for solving this problem. The author shows the problems of education in the North-West of the USSR in the 1940-60th, and demonstrates the difficulties the local governments had to face. By the example of Chukotka, Koryakia, the Magadan and Kamchatka regions, the author reveals the condition of secondary and higher education at that time, analyses the implementation of the plans of the USSR government and the communist party concerning introduction of universal elementary and secondary education. The article represents the unique material regarding education of native people (Chukchas, Koryaks, Evens, Eskimos etc.). The author deals with the unique data, newly revealed facts and statistics. Evidently, in the absence of comprehensive information about the life of northeastern nations of the USSR, the topic is important and valuable.
